Los Angeles Philharmonic Hollywood Bowl

Transportation Improvements

The InfraStrategies team worked with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, a Los Angeles County Organization that operates The Hollywood Bowl (The Bowl), to improve transportation to and from the venue while reducing the impacts on the surrounding neighborhoods. The Bowl has a notoriously challenging transportation problem due to operating in a location that is a natural amphitheater for sound but challenging to access by private vehicle. Parking spaces are limited and stacked, and pedestrian access is challenging due to the venue being located on a large hillside. The Bowl had previously worked with consultants who had taken an engineering-based approach to solutions, in an effort to wring more capacity for more vehicles out of a limited space. InfraStrategies was hired because The Bowl recognized the need for a more innovative approach as previous approaches had failed and/or not yet yielded results. We began the effort by clarifying the goals of the project, which were the two dual priorities of improving customer experience and reducing negative impacts for neighbors. We then collected data by conducting on-site visits to evaluate traffic flow and the challenges of access and egress. We also conducted traffic analyses to understand how backups affected neighborhood streets. We put together a series of recommendations that called for removing parking spaces, raising parking rates, moving rideshare to a more effective location, improving wayfinding, providing better information to customers, prioritizing buses and pedestrians, and partnering with the local transit agency. These changes dramatically improved customer experience and reduced neighborhood concerns.
